The backlog of immigrants to Canada drops marginally to 2.6 million

The amount of IRCC's stock has dropped for the first time since July 2021.

In its August 31 inventory, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) report a drop.

According to inventory data that an IRCC representative provided to CIC News, the backlog has decreased by 95,204 people in just six weeks.

Since last July, the inventory has developed as follows across all business lines

  • August 31, 2022: 2,583,827 persons
  • July 15-17, 2022: 2,679,031 persons
  • June 1-6, 2022: 2,387,884 persons
  • April 30-May 2, 2022: 2,130,385 persons
  • April 11-12, 2022: 2,031,589 persons
  • March 15 and 17, 2022: 1,844,424 persons
  • February 1, 2022: 1,815,628 persons
  • December 15, 2021: 1,813,144 persons
  • October 27, 2021: 1,792,404 persons
  • July 6, 2021: 1,447,474 persons

The IRCC just launched a new website to track the inventory. On July 31, there were 2.4 million in the IRCC's inventory, according to that website. 1.1 million Of them met service criteria, and 1.3 million were behind schedule.

As of September 1, there are 371,620 candidates for citizenship, down from 444,792 on July 15.

As of August 31, there were 513,923 permanent residents in the database, down from 514,116 on July 17.

Additionally, as of August 31, there were 1,698,284 people living in temporary housing, down from 1,720,123 as of July 17.

As a result, there have been decreases in each of the three primary groupings.

PNP inventories and Express Entry

There are currently 40,180 Express Entry candidates in line, down from 51,616 people in the inventory at the end of the previous month.

Rounds of invites for Express Entry applicants from all programs have continued to be held by IRCC. Only those who qualified for the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) were asked to apply for immigration between September 21, 2021, and July 6, 2022. In accordance with the PNP, some programs (enhanced PNPs) are administrated by the Express Entry system while others (basic PNPs) are administrated by the respective systems of the provinces.

The inventory of PNPs under the management of Express Entry has decreased, although the number of base PNPs has climbed from 35,599 in July to 41,832 in August.

The family class inventory is still increasing

Inventory for all family-class immigration programs has increased to 125,746, up from 118,251 in July.

The Spouses and Partners program has the second-largest applicant pool of any immigration program, with 61,073 applicants. The majority of refugees are privately sponsored, numbering 68,123.

Under the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP), 53,029 participants are awaiting decisions, up from 47,025 in July.

IRCC's attempts to reduce the backlog 

Fraser provided a list of the measures Canada is taking to improve the immigration system and reduce the backlog on August 29. These include updating IRCC operations, adding application status trackers, hiring up to 1,250 more staff members by the end of the fall, and publishing monthly data on the IRCC website.
