How Australia sub-class visa 189 differs from visa 190?

Australia has a very clean model of immigration with just 3 sub-classes of visa under umbrella of General Skilled Migration Program. People are often found to be in profound confusion between two similar yet non-identical sub-classes of visa which are visa 189 and 190. So what is the point of difference between these two?

The basic difference between the two is that the sub class 189 is an independent visa for which you need to be skilled in the profile which is in demand in the county of Australia. You need not get nominated by any state/ territory to be able to apply for this sub class. Whereas, under sub-class 190, you mandatorily required to be nominated by an Australian state or territory and also, you are required to subside in that particular state or territory from where you get your nomination from, for a precise time frame i.e., 2 years.

In both the cases, you need to be highly skilled, with a good amount of education and work experience so as to score maximum score. Calculate my immigration score by Australia Point Calculator.

The score requirement is, nevertheless, same in both sub classes i.e., 60 points out of 100 based on personal factors of an individual. If you comply with the aforementioned point requirement, you can then successfully submit your Expression of Interest (EOI) to the Government of Australia.

The choice of sub class 189 and 190 depends on your skill assessment. It is decided there and then, after you skill assessment test, that which sub class of visa is suitable for you. Get immigration free assessment filling up Australia free assessment form.

Despite these differences, there are points of similarities in these sub classes. Let us look at the common requirements for both of these:
  • You need to be younger than age of 49
  • Must be proficient in English language
  • Must score at least 60 points
