Whom can you sponsor?
An applicant can sponsor his or her own parents, grandparents, and any blood or adopted relatives.
If you sponsor divorced parents or grandparents, you will need to submit separate applications. If your divorced parents or grandparents have a current spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner, they are considered dependents on the application and, if accepted, can migrate to Canada along with you.
Siblings, half-siblings, stepbrothers, and stepsisters may only be listed if they meet the dependent child criteria.
For all the individuals you wish to sponsor, as well as their dependents, you must meet the income requirements (spouse, partner, and children).
People you are sponsoring must also meet the requirements.
Your parents, grandparents, and any dependents must submit all necessary paperwork and documents along with your application to demonstrate that you are eligible to receive benefits on their behalf.
Any extra information that the Canadian Authorities may ask for when processing, such as:
- Biometrics,
- Police certificates, or
- Results of medical examinations.
Who can sponsor an elderly parent or grandparent?
If you're selected to apply, you can sponsor your own parents and grandparents.
You must meet the following requirements:
- An applicant must be eighteen years of age or more;
- You must reside in Canada;
- You must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or a person who is recognized as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act;
- You must have sufficient funds to support the individuals you wish to sponsor.
- You must provide proof of your income to demonstrate that you have enough.
- You may have your spouse or common-law partner co-sign to combine your incomes.
- You meet all other requirements outlined in the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations.
How to apply for a Parent and Grandparent permanent resident visa?
You may sponsor your parents and grandparents to immigrate to Canada as permanent residents if you filled out the interest to sponsor form in 2020 and received an invitation to apply for the 2022 intake.
In order to participate in the Parents and Grandparents Program, two applications must be submitted and evaluated:
- The applications for sponsorship and
- Canada Permanent Residency
If both of your applications are accepted, you'll sign an undertaking that goes into effect on the day the person you're sponsoring (and any applicable family members) are admitted as permanent residents of Canada.

How long does it take to process a parent or grandparent visa?
It takes around 3.1 years for the complete Canada PR process for sponsoring Parents or Grandparents to Canada. After applying, the individuals you sponsor can be asked for biometric information. The time required for them to provide their biometrics is included in this processing time.
