The Queenstown Lakes and Central Otago District Councils have achieved an important milestone in the Welcoming Communities project, according to Immigration New Zealand (INZ).

Both the councils and the areas in which they are located have been formally recognised as Committed Welcoming Communities.

It also recognises that they have taken proactive initiatives to establish an atmosphere in which all residents may thrive and feel like they belong.

Immigration New Zealand will begin processing applications for offshore residency.

Prior to the border gradually reopening next year, Immigration New Zealand (INZ) will commence processing all offshore resident applications.

Most visa applications were delayed offshore as a result of border limitations established last year as a result of COVID-19.

Nevertheless, a court recently ruled that offshore residency applications received before the March 2020 border closure would be processed. Around 2,300 applications for residence in all categories that were received prior to the border shutdown are still pending.

The government has finally agreed to lift the ban on first-time resident visa holders given an offshore resident visa from visiting New Zealand.

Nicola Hogg, INZ General Manager, Border and Visa Operations, said the judgement means fresh offshore residence applications can now be processed.

"Candidates will be contacted shortly for an update on their application." Ms Hogg said.

The government will also determine how persons who filed for a residence visa after the border restrictions took effect on March 2020 will be able to travel to New Zealand. In this area, there are approximately 3,000 applications on hand.

The High Court judgement also applies to approximately 4,000 people living overseas who already have resident visas but are unable to travel. This means that these visa holders can now enter the country if they meet the necessary health criteria (such as holding vouchers for Managed Isolation and Quarantine and undertaking pre departure tests).

Depending on the border regulations in place in 2022, travelers may be able to enter without being quarantined.
