Applicants of the regional skilled labour visa 491 (Subclass 491) can live, study, and work in designated areas of Australia for a limited time. There is a five-year validity period for this visa.

Summary of the 491 visas:
- Be on the list of 491 occupations;
- 15,000 spots are allotted annually
- A qualifying relative or state authority must sponsor you; there is a points-based system;
- The visa will be given for an initial period of five years; and, in order to qualify for a Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) 191 Visa, you must live and work in a regional area for three years.
- During those three years, either you or your partner must earn a minimum yearly salary of $53,900 in any occupation (for the employer-sponsored stream, it must be in the nominated occupation).
- All of Australia's regions are outside of Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane.
- You have the option of relocating between regions. Examples of regional cities are Perth, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, Lake Macquarie, the Illawarra, Geelong, Newcastle, Wollongong, Adelaide, Hobart, and Canberra.
- For a period of three years, a skilled PR or 820 partners may not be applied for. The DHA fee for the primary applicant is $4,045, and the spouse's fee is $2,025.
