Submit your application for immigration under the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) in 2022

The 23,100 Canadians who were invited to apply this year can now submit their applications because the IRCC has finished the 2022 PGP Draw and published a handbook describing the process. The following is a list of the actions that were taken.

Canada held a draw from October 12 to October 20 to distribute 23,100 invitations to apply (ITAs) for the 2022 Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP).

As a reminder, the 155,000 candidates for sponsorship who still submitted an interest to sponsor form in 2020 comprise the pool of possible sponsors from which ITAs were issued for this year's program.

You might be one of the 15,000 completed applications that Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) accept this year. We'll go over how to submit your application below if you were lucky enough to get an ITA for this year's PGP.

The IRCC emphasizes that you should only apply for the PGP if you were invited to do so. Please take note that PGP application submissions are currently only accepted online. Applications that are not accompanied by an ITA will be rejected.

How to submit your application for PGP 2022

Use the IRCC's online invitation status form to confirm that you have received an ITA before submitting your application. Check your spam and junk folders as well as your physical mail if this web form confirms receipt of an ITA but you never received an email to the account specified on your interest to sponsor form. When they are unable to email a prospective candidate, IRCC mails physical ITAs. Finally, ensure that you satisfy all of the IRCC's PGP eligibility requirements, including:

  • Being older than 18
  • Meeting the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) criterion for the 2021, 2020, and 2019 tax years or having First Nations status in Canada (if you live outside of Quebec).

Quebec residents are needed to demonstrate that they have met the specific sponsor income standards established by that province for the previous 12 months.

Although you are not required to do so, you might want to do so to make sure your application is precise and comprehensive. The engagement of an immigration attorney on behalf of PGP 2022 candidates is permitted by IRCC.

The following procedures are provided in the IRCC guidance to assist you in completing and submitting your application. You must: by December 24, 2022.

1. Assemble documents

To ensure that potential applicants do not overlook any papers or materials that could cause their application to be sent back, IRCC publishes a document checklist.

2. Completing the form

Review the given instruction manual in its entirety, and fill out each form's sections entirely and precisely. Indicate "N/A" or "Not Applicable" for any parts that do not apply to you.

3. Cover the costs

Fees vary depending on the number of applicants being sponsored by a single application and other factors (dependents on the principal applicant being sponsored to come to Canada etc.)

4. Check your program so you don't make a typical error.

5. Submit your resume.

Make sure the application is electronically signed and that all questions are addressed. Include all necessary supporting papers, such as your ITA letter with your confirmation number, as well as your processing fee receipt.

After I submit my PGP 2022 application, what happens?

The average processing period for PGP applications is currently 37 months (including the time required for those being sponsored to provide their biometrics). However, this timeline is flexible, and the IRCC provides information on its website about the current average processing timeframes.

By setting up an online account on the IRCC website, the person(s) you are sponsoring can receive immediate email updates as well as more in-depth status updates.

Do I have any other options besides the PGP to bring my parents and grandparents to Canada?

Yes.

People who did not receive an ITA may want to consider the Super Visa for their parents and grandparents. The parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents could request to extend their stay in Canada by up to 2 years at a time while they were in the country for up to 5 years at a time through the super visa.
