A language requirement is an essential tool for Canadian Permanent Residence. Without it, you cannot sustain yourself in Canada, forget sustainability, you cannot apply for Canada PR through skilled migration programs. Thus, it is an important part of Canadian Immigration. Canada accepts two test formats for permanent residency programs namely IELTS and CELPIP for English language ability and French Language (TEF) test to apply for Canada’s economic immigration streams.
The high is your language score, the better will be your overall CRS point score which further boosts ITA chances for Canada PR. One little step to improve my IELTS score can lead to permanent residency in Canada.
An increase in IELTS point score even by one or two points can give you a higher Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) score. These scores are used to equate different scoring systems from various language tests. The Canadian government converts IELTS scores into CLB scores to determine how many CRS points your express entry profile will receive.

What Can IELTS Higher Score Do?If you get a high CLB score, you can make a huge impact on your CRS score for Express Entry. Combined with other factors like age, educational qualification, work experience, and language ability, a slight increase in your CLB score could lead to an increase of 100 CRS points.
Thus, we would like to explain the importance of a high IELTS score in a more detailed way!
Say, there are two applicants who both are applying for Canadian Permanent Residence through Express Entry.
Profile 1 is:
- Single applicant
- Age 30
- Holder of Bachelor’s degree
- A close relative resides in Canada
- Has three or more years of skill experience outside of Canada
- Has got CLB 7
The Total CRS Score is 346

Profile 2 is:
- Single
- Age 30
- Holder of Bachelor’s degree
- A close relative resides in Canada
- Has three or more years of skill experience outside of Canada
- Has got CLB 9
The Total CRS Score is 439
Can you see the difference? Both profiles have every factor the same and the only thing different was their CLB (Canada Language Benchmark). A difference in CLB leads to their difference in CRS scores with 93 points.
What is The Main Difference Here?
The only difference was in CLB score, the profile 2 has two points higher than profile 1. In order to receive ITA, profile 1 has to improve their language score. Not much is required, they only need to score one or two points in each module of IELTS namely reading, writing, listening and speaking.
These two are the Canadian Language Benchmark scores that are derived through the points scored in each section of the IELTS bands.
CLB 7 is achieved by getting IELTS bands Reading-6, Writing 6, Speaking 6 and Listening 6.
On the other hand, CLB 9 is achieved by getting IELTS bands Reading 7 Writing 7 Speaking 7 and Listening 8.
Can you see that just one point difference leads to a huge CRS point difference and little improvement can get you closer to the CRS cut-off score for an invitation to apply for permanent residence.
