To improve access for working holidaymakers already residing in New Zealand and those planning to visit, the government has proposed adjustments.
The details of these revisions are given below.
- Extending by six months the visas of travellers who are currently on a working holiday in New Zealand and whose visas expire between 26 August 2022 and 31 May 2023.
- Give former holders of working holiday visas who chose not to travel because of COVID-19 another chance. People will start receiving new visas in October 2022, allowing them to reach New Zealand by the end of January 2023. They are able to stay in New Zealand for a full year with this visa.
- Doubling the maximum number of participants in the Working Holiday Scheme with a one-time boost to account for the seats that went unfilled the previous year as a result of border restrictions. This could result in up to 12,000 more working vacationers visiting New Zealand over the course of the ensuing 12 months.

In order to meet the biggest demand, we will first open the four largest capped schemes before gradually increasing the cap. This also applies to:
- Malaysia
- Chile
- Argentina, and
- Taiwan.
This will be done by the end of September 2022.
The leftover more modest covered plans will then, at that point, be carried out by January 2023. This will guarantee every nation gets the advantage of the current year's assignment.
The completion date for this is September 30, 2022.
After that, by January 2023, the remaining smaller capped schemes will be implemented. This will guarantee that every nation benefits from the funding this year.
Changes to the Working Holiday Scheme in brief:
- Visas for onshore working holidaymakers with expiration dates between 26 August 2022 and 31 May 2023 will be extended by six months.
- An additional chance for those who previously possessed a working holiday visa but were unable to go because of Covid-19 to spend the summer in New Zealand. People will start receiving new visas in October 2022, allowing them to reach New Zealand by the end of January 2023. They are able to stay in New Zealand for a full year with this visa.
- To compensate for the seats that were unfilled owing to the border shutdown last year, double the Working Holiday Scheme cap with a one-time increase. This will allow an additional 12,000 working vacationers to visit New Zealand over the course of the following six months.
