Canada will reintroduce Express Entry for permanent residency. How does it function?

The Express Entry program, launched in 2015, is Canada's primary source of skilled foreign workers.

Canada has resumed issuing invitations to apply for permanent residency under its Express Entry program, which is the country's primary source of skilled foreign workers. All program invitation rounds were halted due to a backlog of applications caused by border closures in the aftermath of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic.

According to the Aptech Visa website, 1,500 invitations were issued on July 6 as part of Canada's first all-program Express Entry draw since December 2020 for permanent residence applications, and the 226th since the program's inception in 2015. Previous all-programs invitation rounds typically produced between 3,000 and 5,000 invitations to apply (ITAs) for permanent residence.

"I am pleased to announce that Express Entry draws have officially resumed, and applications will be processed at our six-month processing standard," Immigration Minister Sean Fraser said last week, according to CIC News.

Draws for the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), a popular way for temporary foreign workers and international graduates with work experience to gain permanent residency, have been paused until September 2021. The two other skilled worker programs managed by Canada's Express Entry system, the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) and the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), were suspended in December 2020.

Is it necessary to have a job offer to be eligible for Express Entry?

While a job offer is not required to be eligible under the Express Entry system, it does add points to the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), which is used to evaluate candidates for permanent residency based on their human capital. Age, education, language skills, and work experience all contribute to the CRS score.
