India Is The Major Source Of Immigration In Australia


The Australian federal government data says that India is a key immigration source for Australia.
India continues to be the prime immigration source of immigrants for the past many years in spite of fall in the Indian migrant numbers since 2012-13.

The Australia’s Migration Program report released by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) states that 189,097 number of immigrants came to Australia in 2014-15 year.  in 2016-17 Indian migrants coming to Australia has also increased.

The number includes all the streams under Permanent Residency of Australia namely family, skill and special eligibility categories. The migration numbers are exclusive of refugees.

In 2014-15, India was the standout country of origin with 34,874 people migrating to Australia from India, followed closely by China. However, this rank has now been reciprocal by China being on number one followed by India currently.

The lowest number of immigration intake from India was in 2012-13 when total number of Indian immigrants was 40,051, followed closely by China.

In earlier years, India was behind China and United Kingdom with respect to number of immigrants coming to Australia. Now, there has been a steady increase in the number of immigration level coming from India. Also, Australia has increased the immigration level.
